The Best of the Yellow Springs Police Report 1985 - 2003 (Edited x Julia Dzwonkoski & Kye Potter)
Special Awry edition of this scarce pamphlet which was originally published in a small edition in 2003. It's too funny to sadly languish out-of-print (and shenanigans are timeless anyway). (MK)
Yellow Springs, Ohio is known, if at all, as the home of Antioch College and for Dave Chappelle, who grew up there and still lives there today. It’s fair to say that it’s a special place and that the people who live there know it. This book was culled from 20 years of microfiche reproductions of the Village Police Report section of the Yellow Springs News. In a form calling for an objective accounting of relevant and observed facts, these selections often skew into what is discouraged in such reports -unsubstantiated opinions and conclusions, and some very confusing grammar. While the documentation of these events often has no discernible bureaucratic benefit, this is where the small town personality really comes through. The public space, especially the public record, can be sterile and lacking personality - not here! These ‘stories’ feed back to this community, offering an idiosyncratic glimpse at who and what they are. There’s a subtle, almost ambiently comic nature to these incidents. First compiled in 2003, now reading through them 21 years later, it seems that each report builds on the next - an utterly mundane selection sets me off laughing at this town, the U.S., all of humanity! A microcosm of human folly condensed into a pamphlet - hope you enjoy. -Kye
